Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where is Lazy Puffin Lodge located?

Lazy Puffin Lodge is in Little Eagle Harbor, Ugak Bay, on the remote coast of Kodiak Island, Alaska. The lodge sits in a protected coastal valley and is accessible by boat or air charter.

  • How do we get to the lodge?

Fly into Kodiak, Alaska. We provide van pickup in town and boat transportation to and from the lodge (weather dependent). You can book an air charter at your own expense if preferred.

  • Do we stay in Kodiak before or after the trip?

Most guests spend the night in Kodiak before and after traveling to the lodge. Hotel stays in town are not included.

  • What are the sleeping arrangements like?

Sleeping accommodations are bunkroom style with clean, comfortable luxury cots and room for personal gear. We can host up to 12 guests, but because our boat is licensed for 6 passengers, we typically book groups of up to 6 primary fishing or hunting guests per stay. Non-fishing companions are welcome at a reduced rate. If your group includes more than 6 guests total, please contact us to arrange your booking.

  • Private-Group Exclusive Policy

We only host one group at a time. Your stay is exclusive to your group. We do not mix separate parties.

  • The Lodge Atmosphere

We love Alaska and enjoy sharing knowledge, stories, and experience so you feel at home. Expect home-cooked meals, hot showers, warm coffee, conversation when you want it, and quiet when you need it.

  • What if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?

We are happy to accommodate most dietary needs with advance notice.

  • Do you have Wi-Fi or cell service?

There is spotty cell service when out exploring. At the lodge, a usable AT&T signal and Wi-Fi calling usually work. We use Garmin InReach when away from the lodge.

  • What species can we fish for?

Depending on the season: Halibut, Pacific Cod, Rock Sole, Lingcod, many rockfish species, all five Pacific salmon species, Dolly Varden, Rainbow Trout (catch-and- release), and seasonal Steelhead (catch-and-release).

  • How far are the fishing spots?

Some spots are 10–15 minutes from the lodge; others are 35–45 minutes depending on sea conditions.

  • Are fishing trips guided?

Yes. All fishing is guided from our 32’ Armstrong Marine landing craft with heated cabin, real bathroom, table seating, and open deck.

  • How many people can fish at once?

Our Coast Guard license allows a maximum of 6 guests on the boat at a time. Larger groups rotate activities, so everyone gets quality time.

  • Do you vacuum seal fish?

Yes. Vacuum sealing and freezing your fish is included. Shipping is not included.

  • What kind of wildlife might we see?

Bald eagles, sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, whales (seasonal), foxes, Sitka black- tailed deer, and Kodiak brown bears. We view wildlife respectfully and at safe distances.

  • Are hunts guided?

No. Hunts are self-guided. We provide boat transport, lodging, meals, and space to hang meat. You are responsible for field decisions and game care.

  • Is there a required contract?

Yes. The State of Alaska requires a Hunt Transport Contract for self-guided big game hunts.

  • Can we process game meat at the lodge?

Yes. You may process your own meat using your own knives and tools. We cannot assist. Commercial processors are available in town.

  • What happens if weather affects travel or fishing?

If seas are rough, we adjust plans. If weather delays your return, there is no extra charge for additional nights. Safety always comes first.

  • What gear is provided?

Fishing rods, reels, tackle, bait, life jackets, and safety gear are provided. We also vacuum seal and freeze fish.
